What is ‘Pose’ Writer and Director Janet Mock’s Net Worth in 2021?

Janet Mock is an author, activist, writer, and director, and has been behind much of FX's hit series "Pose" since its inception. Mock recently spoke out about not receiving what she's worth in Hollywood. Just how much is Mock's estimated net worth in 2021?

Janet Mock has been an outspoken advocate for transgender rights for the past decade, as well as a TV writer and director. As an author, Mock contributed to the discussions around trans equality at a time when more and more voices began speaking out, and she’s continued to shape film and TV from the inside in the years since.

Janet Mock’s journalism career

Before she was a famous activist and creator, however, Mock was a journalist who worked in the entertainment industry. She came out as a trans woman in a 2011 article in Marie Claire and her career as a public figure took off.

Mock continued to work for People and Marie Claire magazines before she inked a book deal to write a memoir about her teenage years growing up in Hawaii. Redefining Realness: My Path To Womanhood, Identity, Love, & So Much More was released in 2014; in 2017, she released a follow-up memoir, Surpassing Certainty, about her twenties.

Janet Mock’s TV projects

Mock’s first major foray into the world of film and TV was in the 2016 HBO documentary The Trans List. Mock produced the film along with director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, as well as interviewed the cast, which featured 11 prominent transgender figures including Laverne Cox, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, Alok Vaid-Menon, and Caitlyn Jenner.

The premiere of Pose in 2018 changed the landscape of how trans people are viewed, hired, and promoted in media. Mock is a writer, director, and producer on the show, and is the first trans woman of color hired as a writer for a TV series in history.

Pose set a new industry standard by hiring trans actors to play trans characters, as well as including several trans people behind the scenes. Given that the show is set in the world of New York’s ballroom scene in the 1980s and ’90s, it was imperative for the show to be done right. Mock directed the acclaimed first-season episode “Love Is the Message,” which made her the first trans woman of color to write and direct a television episode.

In 2019, Mock signed a three-year deal with Netflix giving them exclusive rights to her TV series and a first-look option on feature film projects. Mock continued her trailblazing path, as the move made her the first trans woman of color to secure a deal with a major content company.
